PRIVATE GUIDED Berlin-warnemünde EXCURSIONS
No European trip would be complete without visiting Berlin, however, reaching this landlocked city on your own from a distant port can be unnecessarily stressful. Not to mention trying to hit all the major landmarks while making sure you get back to the ship before it sails. Why not leave it all in our safe hands; see the sights, walk the streets, and take home a personalised experience of the German capital tailored just for you.
Organising your own private guided tour is a great way to skip the queues at the port, avoid the overpriced package-deal offered by the cruise lines, and ensure you have more time to experience this unique city as it should be – like a local.
We run Berlin Shore Excursions from all the major cruise lines docking at Warnemünde/Rostock. Before booking, feel free to send us an enquiry with your specific details (including which ship you will be arriving on) – to firstname.lastname@example.org – and we’d be happy to help arrange the particulars to make your trip exceptional.
Our full day Berlin private shore excursion starts from the Rostock/Warnemünde cruise ship terminal and covers the major highlights of the German capital dating back to the period of Prussian rule, through the time of Imperial Germany, the Golden Twenties and the Weimar Republic, Hitler’s Third Reich and the Cold Wardivision of the city – continuing to the present day.
After being met at the port terminal by one of our expert drivers, you’ll be whisked through the northeastern agricultural flatlands of Germany in the comfort of one of our chauffeur driven vehicles – all quality German cars and vans. Unlike the slower public excursions organised by the official companies, this cuts your transportation time down significantly, allowing for more exploration in the capital – especially if your ship is only docked for a short time.
On reaching Berlin, you will see the Western side of the city – starting at the Charlottenburg Palace (named after the first Prussia Queen, Sophie Charlotte) before continuing along the grand boulevards of the West – Bismarkallee and the Kufurstendamm (site of the 1938 Reichkristallnacht attacks) – you will reach Wittenbergplatz and the famous Kadewe department store – before detouring into the Tiergarten to see the massive Siegessaulle Victory Column constructed to celebrate victories in the wars that led to German unification in 1871.
The path through the central Tiergarten park, popular during the 1930s and 40s with anti-Nazi dissidents wanting to converse without fear of being overheard, leads to the city’s government quarter – the Reichstag building, the Brandenburg Gate & the nearby Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Journeying through the former Nazi government quarter you will have time to see the site of Hitler’s Führerbunker – the former Nazi Airforce Ministry, site of the SS/Gestapo Headquarters and Topography of Terror Museum – before reaching one of the few remaining pieces of the Berlin Wall in the city and the former military crossing point at Checkpoint Charlie.
You will have time for a scheduled lunch break at a location of your choice (we can make restaurant arrangements alongside your booking – whether it is a traditional beer garden or restaurant for hearty German food, or something quick for the road, maybe a picnic in the central park?) continuing afterwards further into the central Mitte district to the UNESCO Heritage Listed Museums Island and the grand Unter den Linden boulevard.
Driving past the State Opera House, the Humboldt University and nearby Nazi Book Burning Square your tour will conclude near Potsdamer Platz where you will say goodbye to your tour guide and be driven back to the Rostock/Warnemünde port terminal with ample time remaining to board your ship before its departure.
(It is possible to tailor this tour to include more aspects of Berlin’s Third Reich or Cold War history/Jewish Berlin sights or a visit to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial north of Berlin – on request)
